Walter Mosley’s Devil in a Blue DressPaulo Coelho’s The Alchemist and Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency made the list of books that will help kick off World Book Night 2013. Also on the list are books by Willa Cather, Tina Fey and Mark Twain.

An independent panel of book sellers and librarians select 30 titles, from new releases to classics. Titles must be in paperback and are selected from different genres with a mix of author gender, ethnicity and race.  To check out the full list for 2013, click here.

World Book Night is held every April 23rd, which is the birthday of Shakespeare. It is also a date to honor Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of Don Quixote, who died on the same day in 1616. The day was started to celebrate and promote reading and spread it globally. Last year more than 80,000 people gave away 2.5 million  book in four different countries.

In Spain, World Book Night is celebrated by giving a book and a flower to a loved one. In the United States,  more than 25,000 volunteers collect more than a half a million books and donate them to communities in need. With reading for pleasure on the decline, resulting in a decrease in United States literacy, supporting this effort has become even more important.

To get involved, go to the World Book Night website and sign up.
